Shocking or sanitizing a pool or spa is a regular process of adding chlorine to pool or spa water, to raise free chlorine (FC) to recommended levels of 3ppm for a swimming pool and 3-6ppm for a hot tub to kill harmful germs and bacteria, and to remove chloramine and other organic and inorganic materials from pool and spa water.
